Since 2011, hundreds of grants have been awarded to recovery partners to advance priorities of the Action Agenda for Puget Sound and Implementation Strategies. PSI research scientists analyze, synthesize, and communicate grant outcomes to identify how those results can support future recovery efforts. Our synthesis work aims to ensure continued contribution of past projects to regional recovery efforts; to highlight successful strategies that could be a focus of future efforts; and to communicate key findings and messages. These syntheses have informed Implementation Strategies and other Puget Sound recovery planning efforts.
Between 2011 and 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency distributed Puget Sound National Estuary Program and Geographic Funds to seven Lead Organizations. Subsequently, in 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency assembled three Strategic Initiative Leads to expand the planning, coordination, and grantmaking work begun by the Lead Organizations.
Our researchers synthesized results of projects funded by three of the Lead Organizations established before 2016, and results of projects funded by the Habitat Strategic Initiative Lead 1.0 between 2016 and 2020.
This partnership between the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Department of Natural Resources funds projects to advance the protection and restoration of rivers, forests, shorelines, and estuaries.

The Washington Department of Health funded projects to prevent, reduce, and control illness-causing microorganisms. Fecal coliform, Vibrio, and marine biotoxins impair water quality and can lead to shellfish harvest restrictions and swimming beach closures.

The Floodplains and Estuaries Implementation Strategy emphasizes the importance of Integrated Floodplain Management (IFM) approaches that consider needs related to flood safety, salmon habitat, and agricultural viability. This report provides a comparative analysis of four IFM groups operating in the Puget Sound region.
