About the Encyclopedia of Puget Sound

The Encyclopedia is based at the University of Washington’s Puget Sound Institute, and works through collaborations and partnerships with leading researchers and agencies. We help you deliver your findings to Puget Sound scientists and policymakers by providing an innovative online communications framework with solid editorial support. Advances in digital technology now offer unprecedented opportunities to find and share scientific information. Broaden your impacts. Join our network of experts and contribute your knowledge to the Encyclopedia.

A key need

Puget Sound faces a multitude of challenges as human population increases, and the region’s lands and waters are transformed by development and climate change. An effort as large and crucial as the cleanup of Puget Sound—with its many facets and thousands of active researchers— is as much an information challenge as it is a scientific one.

Our mission.

Promote synthesis and improve access to the best-available, most relevant scientific information in support of protection and restoration of the Puget Sound ecosystem.

An information ecosystem.

The Encyclopedia will be a living document that can be edited and updated by a community of credentialed scientists. Find articles covering a broad selection of disciplines related to Puget Sound recovery:

  • Biology: information on the status and health of species of the Puget Sound region.
  • Chemistry: marine, freshwater, sediment, pollution, stormwater.
  • Physical environment: geology, bathymetry, cartography, meteorology, physical oceanography and hydrology.
  • Social and economic sciences: quality of life index, fisheries, culture and history.
  • Ecosystem-based management: historical and current policy related to protection of the Puget Sound ecosystem; ecosystem indicators.
  • Threats (drivers and pressures): including climate change and population growth, shoreline armoring, eutrophication and invasive species.
